Say the milligram before you say Propecia
Flip the pharmacy label. The INN should read finasteride and the strength should read 1 mg if the indication is androgenetic alopecia. Brand optional. Strength mandatory.
Men ask for Propecia because the advert stuck. Scottish NHS fills are usually generic 1 mg. That is the same daily count if the tablet is 1 mg. It is not a scam because the foil is not blue.
If the bag says 5 mg and the dermatology letter says hair, do not start. Call. A five-fold count error is silent until PSA, side effects, or a pregnancy-handling mess tell the tale.
Six weeks of 1 mg is not a strength error. Twelve months is a hair verdict. Five milligrams is a prostate licence, not a faster hair path.
Software that offers Proscar on a bare 'finasteride' search is the trap. Stay at the desk until the slip prints 1 mg and the indication.
Crushed 5 mg pieces are a pregnancy-handling problem before they are a bargain. Ask for a 1 mg quote first.
PSA requests should already know finasteride 1 mg since [date]. A 'low' number on 1 mg can hide a rise that would have shown off drug.
Quartering Proscar is a handling problem
Forums still sell fifths of a 5 mg tablet as a 1 mg hack. Pieces are uneven. Crumbs are not film-coated. Women who are or may be pregnant must not handle crushed or broken finasteride because of the teratogenic risk to a male fetus.
Generic 1 mg pricing on a legitimate pharmacy quote often kills the economic argument. Ask for that quote before you buy a splitter.

If cost is the only barrier, say so. A private 1 mg and an NHS 1 mg are still 1 mg. A homemade 1.3 mg shard is not.
Who may handle the 1 mg blister
Whole film-coated 1 mg tablets are the intended household object. Crushed or broken tablets are the pregnancy-handling risk for anyone who might be pregnant.
Do not ask a partner to cut 5 mg at the kitchen table. That is the split myth plus powder.
A child who finds 1 mg should not be offered 'a vitamin'. Keep the blister up.
If a pregnancy is possible in the house, say so at the 1 mg start so the handling sentence is spoken once, out loud.
Disposal of leftover 5 mg from a prostate relative belongs at a pharmacy, not in a shared pill box next to 1 mg.
What the PSA request should already know
Finasteride 1 mg daily since [date]. Interpret PSA with that in mind. Do not stop 1 mg for two weeks unless the requester said so.
A 'low' PSA on 1 mg can hide a rise that would have been visible off drug. The GP needs the name.
Digital rectal exams are not replaced by a quiet PSA on 1 mg.
If urology later starts 5 mg for prostate, the hair 1 mg should be retired so the drawer is one count.
Bring the 1 mg blister to the PSA visit. Propecia as a word is not a milligram.
Twelve months is a hair verdict, not a 5 mg temptation
Vertex and mid-scalp photographs at month 0, 3, and 12 beat a weekly mirror. Six weeks of 1 mg is not a strength error.
If month 12 is flat, the next talk is stop, add topical minoxidil, or accept the baseline - not Proscar 5 mg as a hair hack.
Shedding in the first months can happen. It is a clinic question. It is not a reason to quarter a 5 mg tablet.
Keep the same lighting for photos. Bathroom bulbs lie.
Write the 1 mg start date on the first photo so a locum does not restart the clock after a generic switch.
George Street checks for a 1 mg fill
Ask the pharmacist to read finasteride one milligram aloud. Hearing it beats nodding at a shelf edge that still says Propecia.
Software that defaults to Proscar 5 mg on a 'finasteride' search is a known trap. Catch it at the counter.
Generic switches at 1 mg are expected. Strength changes are errors.
- Script line: finasteride 1 mg daily for hair.
- Household list matches the script line.
- Empty 1 mg blister in the wallet for A and E reconciliation.
When the 1 mg arrives as something else
Legitimate UK packs carry a dispensing label and an MHRA path. Social-market 'Propecia 5 mg for hair' is a red flag on both the brand and the milligram.
Telehealth renewals need a photo of the current 1 mg blister so the remote prescriber sees the same count you swallow.
Impossible per-tablet prices are counterfeit risk before they are bargains.
Why 1 mg and 5 mg are not a bargain ladder
Propecia 1 mg is the hair licence. Effect on vertex and mid-scalp is judged over months - often three to see a signal, twelve to decide. Stopping 1 mg lets the process resume.
Proscar 5 mg is the prostate licence. PLESS-era sexual-adverse discontinuation sat at 3.7 percent versus 2.1 percent on placebo over four years. That is a different trial population and a different daily milligram.
Dutasteride 0.5 mg is another 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor. It is not a 1 mg finasteride substitute unless specifically prescribed.
| Label line | Daily count | Hair-loss script? |
|---|---|---|
| Finasteride 1 mg / Propecia | 1 mg | Yes if prescribed |
| Finasteride 5 mg / Proscar | 5 mg | No - prostate licence |
| Quartered 5 mg | Guessed fragments | Not a labelled 1 mg |
| Dutasteride 0.5 mg | Different INN | Only if named |
The 1 mg count still moves PSA
Finasteride lowers serum PSA. The usual counselling line is to tell the GP so they can interpret a later PSA with that in mind - often discussed as about a 50 percent fall on the 5 mg prostate literature, and still relevant at 1 mg.
A locum who sees a 'low' PSA without knowing you take 1 mg can miss a prostate problem. Write finasteride 1 mg on the household list, not only Propecia.
Do not stop 1 mg for two weeks before a PSA unless the requesting clinician told you to. Unplanned gaps are how hair shed and lab timing both go wrong.
The repeat line that keeps 1 mg from becoming 5 mg
Finasteride 1 mg daily, androgenetic alopecia, not Proscar. That line on the repeat slip is the whole literacy glint.
If the slip only says finasteride, software will offer 5 mg. Stay at the desk.
Private online renewals should ask for a photo of the 1 mg blister. A photo of hair is not a milligram.
Ninety-count 1 mg is a common US cash row. A seven-count 'trial' from a marketplace is a different risk.
When a locum changes you to 5 mg 'because that is what we have', refuse and wait for 1 mg.
Write PSA on the same slip so the next blood form already knows.
Partners collecting the bag should hear 1 mg aloud at the counter.
If cost pushes you toward a splitter, get the 1 mg quote first. The split myth is a handling problem, not a bargain.
Keep an empty 1 mg blister in the wallet. A and E at 02:00 will not remember Propecia as a strength.
Three words: finasteride, one milligram, daily
Brand optional. Five milligrams is a different licence. Broken 5 mg pieces are not a 1 mg dose.
Sexual-adverse detail is the next glint. Confirm any switch with the prescriber or pharmacist.
Three words remain: finasteride, one milligram, daily. Brand optional. Five milligrams is another licence. Broken 5 mg pieces are not a 1 mg dose.
Month-4 thinner photos are early, not a Proscar invitation. Month-12 flat is a hair decision, still at 1 mg until they change the indication.
Repeat slips that omit 1 mg become 5 mg at the next locum. Add the milligram and the hair words before you leave the desk.
A 90-count 1 mg box is a quarter if you swallow daily. A 30-count 5 mg box is a prostate month. Do not equate 'three months of tablets' across brands.
Women who are or may be pregnant do not handle crushed or broken 1 mg tablets. Whole film-coated tablets that stay intact are a different labelled caution. Keep the blister closed.
Online '1 mg equivalent' from a 5 mg Proscar split is still a prostate tablet in pieces. This desk will not treat that as Propecia 1 mg. Ask for the licensed 1 mg product.
